Devices designed to allow two independent computer networks and/or systems to communicate with each other, transmitting data and/or other information between the devices. Data interface units typically include an electronic processing unit and wireless or cable connections to both interfaced devices; they may also include appropriate software that contains the languages and codes that the applications use to communicate with each other and with the hardware. Healthcare applications of data interface units include interfacing of bedside devices (e.g., physiologic monitors) and point-of-care and laboratory analyzers and equipment to computers, workstations, and/or hospital information systems.
