Heart (cardiac) surgical scissors designed to cut cardiac tissue in minimal-access procedures. These scissors are typically handheld, manual instruments with two metallic (e.g., stainless steel) straight, razor-like, very sharp blades that slide past each other (i.e., shearing action), making possible smooth cutting even of calcified tissue. Typically, the blades are attached to very long and slender shanks, finished in handles with the proximal ends conformed as a ring to facilitate holding and operating with the fingers; both parts are joined by a swivel pin close to the blades. Minimally invasive heart surgery scissors are used in minimal-access cardiothoracic procedures.
