Surgical trephines designed to cut and remove circular sections of eye tissue. These trephines are handheld instruments consisting of a hollow cylinder with a circular-saw-like edge attached to an integral perpendicular handle for application of torque; some surgical trephines may have detachable blades and a rotary manually operated or powered (e.g., electric) surgical handpiece. Dedicated eye surgery trephines are available for several ophthalmic procedures, including corneal implantation and excision of chalazion or tissue in stenotic or occluded lacrimal ducts.
