Pneumatic cast saws designed to cut a strip of cast using serrated blades that reciprocate alternately. These saws are handheld instruments with a pneumatic motor; a mechanism to drive the blades; one or two detachable, toothed, straight or curved blades; and a hose connected to the pressurized gas source; some saws include a foot guide for the blades. Reciprocating pneumatic cast saws are used to cut casts using dedicated plaster or fiberglass blades for cast removal especially from the thorax or pelvis, for creation of a hinged cast, or to open a window in the cast to view underlying tissue; saws using two parallel reciprocating blades that cut a strip of cast are also available.
