Trephines designed to cut and remove circular sections of tissue for histological examination (i.e., biopsy). These trephines are typically handheld, manual instruments consisting of hollow cylinders with a circular-saw-like serrated working edge and an integral, perpendicular handle for application of torque; some biopsy trephines include detachable blades and a rotary manually operated or powered (e.g., electric) surgical handpiece. The biopsy sample occupies the hollow center of the trephine from which it can be removed after trephine extraction. Dedicated trephines are available for biopsy of the bones, bone marrow, and skin.
