This SMQ is intended to identify relevant MedDRA terms used in a search for cases of possible gastrointestinal perforation, ulceration, haemorrhage or obstruction. Gastrointestinal perforation: Perforation is act of boring or piercing through a part or a hole made through a part or substance. Gastrointestinal perforation - perforation of all layers of gastrointestinal tract. It can be uncovered (in direct contact with the whole peritoneal cavity) or covered (localized by the omentum or other organs). Gastrointestinal perforation is characterised by localized or diffused peritonitis and manifested as generalized rigidity of abdominal wall, severe pain, and ileus. Uncovered perforation is confirmed by demonstration of free gas in abdominal cavity (X-ray of diaphragmatic region with patient in upright position).
