  • Surgical calipers designed to measure the distance between two points of the eye during ophthalmic surgery procedures. These instruments are typically handheld, metallic, compasslike instruments with two adjustable, centrally hinged legs and either straight, angled, or curved sharp, rigid tips; the proximal end (i.e., the handle) usually includes a calibrated scale and a screw to adjust the separation of the legs (i.e., Castroviejo calipers, also used in other surgical procedures). Dedicated ophthalmic calipers are available that are articulated at the proximal end with a scale at the working end intended for cataract incision measurement (i.e., Osher calipers).
