  • Point-of-care analyzers designed to measure ammonia in whole blood. Many of these analyzers use microdiffusion colorimetric methods; the ammonia ion in the specimen is converted to ammonia gas, which is liberated from the blood sample and reaches an indicator (e.g., bromocresol green) to cause a color development proportional to the concentration of ammonia. These analyzers are used mainly in the diagnosis and follow-up of several hepatic and renal pathologies; ammonia levels are also high in patients infected with some bacteria (e.g., Helicobacter pylori).
