  • Hand-grip dynamometers designed to measure the strength of the hand grip, usually a result of the combined force of the hand and forearm muscles, using a rubber or plastic bulb that is squeezed by the hand. These dynamometers are manual, handheld instruments that include a handle with the bulb and a calibrated gauge (e.g., a dial) to show the measured value of the force (usually in pounds, kilograms, or both) and/or pressure (e.g., pounds per square inch [psi]); some instruments retain the values of the maximum force reading until reset. Dynamometers with several different sized interchangeable squeeze bulbs (i.e., Martin squeeze dynamometers) that can be easily fitted to a common gauge are available. Bulb squeeze dynamometers are the simplest instruments available to measure hand grip, they are intended mainly for use in physician\'s offices and for assessment during physical therapy treatments.
