  • Electrothermal cautery units designed to coagulate tissue by applying an electric current to a high-resistance element through the working channel of an endoscope (e.g., resectoscope) intended to control bleeding (i.e., hemostasis). Electrothermal cautery units do not deliver electric current to the tissue; the high-resistance tip becomes heated when an electric current is passed through it. These units typically consist of a power source (e.g., radiofrequency generator) that delivers the electric current, appropriate controls, a probe with heating elements that may also include irrigation ports, and appropriate connectors and/or adapters to attach the generator to the probe.
