  • Electrothermal cautery units designed to coagulate and/or destroy tissue by applying an electric current to a high-resistance element through a catheter. These units typically consist of power source (e.g., radiofrequency or microwave generator) that delivers the electric current, appropriate controls, one or more dedicated catheters, and appropriate connectors and/or adapters to attach the catheter to the unit. The unit usually controls temperature and energy delivery automatically. The catheter is percutaneously inserted into vessels (e.g., arteries) and/or naturally or surgically created cavities to perform electrocautery. Dedicated transcatheter electrothermal cautery units are used in specialized procedures such as angioplasty and intradiscal electrothermal annuloplasty.
