Detectors designed to facilitate the visualization and identification of abnormalities in the periodontal and oral cavity tissues using fluorescent light. These devices are typically a light source (usually blue) that causes tissue fluorescence; healthy tissue observed through the handpiece has a bright green color, while abnormal and/or suspicious tissue appears darker due to a loss of fluorescence. Induced fluorescence periodontal/oral cavity tissue abnormality examination detectors are used by dental and other healthcare providers to identify abnormal tissue (e.g., oral cancer, dysplasia) that is not apparent in visible light; the devices are also used by surgeons to help distinguish diseased tissue that should be resected.
