Laminar flow hoods designed to create a vertical laminar airflow in the working area, providing an appropriate environment in which sterile materials such as culture media and drug preparations do not become contaminated. Vertical laminar flow hoods typically include blowers and may include a high-efficiency particulate-air (HEPA) filter for the inflow of air. Vertical laminar flow hoods are used in clinical laboratories and to prepare drugs (including cytostatics) under sterile conditions; they do not protect the operator from the materials under preparation. They are not biological safety enclosures and should not be used when infectious or potentially infectious materials are handled.
