Plain (nonimpregnated) dressings designed to cover and protect a wound without any additional functions. These dressings are usually made of raw materials such as natural fibers (e.g., cotton, alginate), biological products (e.g., collagen), synthetic materials (e.g., polymers), or of materials. Nonimpregnated dressings are used mainly to maintain a moist environment, to absorb exudates, and/or to prevent contact with bacteria.
