  • Foot implants designed for the stabilization of the subtalar joint; blocking forward, downward, and medial displacement of the talus and allowing normal motion of the joint. These implants are available in several shapes and materials, including plastic (e.g., high-weight polyethylene) angled discs (that may be cemented) that are placed on the surface of the calcaneus, domes that are placed in a hole in the dorsal surface of the calcaneus, and metal (e.g., titanium) conic implants that are placed and threaded in the space between the calcaneus and talus (i.e., sinus tarsi). Temporary implants (also known as endorthoses) that are usually threaded in the sinus tarsi, made of a combination of titanium and polyethylene and intended for removal after joint stabilization are also available. Subtarsal foot implants are used in a variety of orthopedic treatments, including for subtalar instability, flat foot, deformities associated with tibial tendon dysfunction, and severe pronation.
