Three main forms: affecting the cornea and conjunctiva; endophthalmitis (infection inside the eye); infections of the ocular adnexa and orbit. Treatment of eye infections is based on severity of symptoms and magnitude of possible outcome. Severe conjunctivitis requires aggressive management with broad spectrum antibiotics. Vision loss can occur despite treatment. Patients who have had recent surgery are at risk for developing endophthalmitis. Numerous bacterial and fungal organisms can cause ocular infections.
