Protective shields (guards) designed for use with burs and/or drill bits when they are operated attached to a rotatory machine. These guards typically consist of a hollow metallic cylinder (shaft) placed around the drill bit or bur; the cylinder is open at the operating end to allow drilling and includes at the proximal end a coupling to the rotatory (e.g., drill, handpiece) machine. Bur/drill bit guards are intended also to facilitate accurate positioning of the drill bit and/or bur and may also help to drill straight forward, avoiding lateral deviations; the main clinical use is for delicate and/or restricted access in surgical procedures that require drilling. Dedicated guards are available for specific surgical procedures (e.g., rhinoplasty, laminectomy).
