Holders designed to hold surgical instruments during operative procedures. These holders typically consist of a sturdy structure that permits easy access and removal, either sequential or simultaneous, of one or more surgical instruments during an operative procedure; the holders may be attached to the surgical table and/or to other structures (e.g., surgical retractors). Both flat and curved instruments can be securely held by the holders; most holders can accommodate only a limited range of instrument diameters and curvatures. Surgical instrument holders are intended to facilitate the manipulation of the instruments during a surgical procedure. Surgical holders can be used for a particular type of device (e.g., electrosurgical active electrodes, knives, retractors) and/or procedures (e.g., laparoscopes in minimal access surgery).
