Devices that consist of a small pin (i.e., a piece of metal with a sharp point on one end) that is bent back on itself to form a spring mechanism, and that incorporates a guard to cover the point (i.e., a clasp). The clasp serves two purposes: (1) to form a closed loop thereby providing a mechanism to properly fasten the pin to whatever it is applied to; and (2) to cover the end of the pin to protect the user from the sharp point. In healthcare, safety pins are commonly used to fasten pieces of fabric, clothing, or other material together. They are available separately, or may be packaged together with other devices that typically utilize safety pins (e.g., triangular bandages), or in kits of common supplies used for a specific purpose (e.g., first aid kits).
