?:definition
  • Measuring instruments designed to determine consistency (i.e., degree of firmness), viscosity, and/or flow rate of constituent molecules of high-viscosity (viscous) fluids. These instruments typically consist of a mechanism by which the fluid flows under its own weight on a graduated scale, a spring-loaded gate to prevent premature flow of the sample, and a stop watch to determine the distance that the substance flows in a given time (i.e., flow rate). The values obtained are compared with appropriate standards that permit the determination of the fluid characteristics. Dedicated consistometers using several different mechanisms (e.g., Bostwick consistometers) are also available, including consistometers where the flow of substances is performed on a scale at a specific angle (i.e., with a predetermined slope).
