Software designed to operate stress (cardiac and/or pulmonary) exercise workstations, control/monitor a limited number of their functions, and/or process data and images obtained during the stress exercise procedure. This software usually interacts with devices used in the procedure, such as recorders, electrocardiography monitors, static bicycles or treadmills, and ergometers; it may also perform a variety of algorithms to facilitate the operation and analysis of the measurements performed during the exercise procedure. Stress exercise workstation management software is intended to work only with one or a few models of workstations and related devices, usually supplied by the same manufacturer. This also facilitates the processing and/or sending of data from the workstation to and from hospital information systems. The software is not usually available separate from the workstation but may be updated (i.e., through the release of modified versions) during the life of the equipment. Dedicated software intended for cardiac, pulmonary, and cardiopulmonary procedures is also available.
