  • Computed tomography (CT) study software designed to acquire, process, and archive data and images obtained during studies intended for bone mineral density (BMD) assessment. This software usually works with CT scanning systems and workstations; it may also interact with devices used in the procedures, such as monitors, printers, contrast media injectors, and recorders. The software is intended to work only with one or a few models of CT scanning systems and related devices, usually supplied by the same manufacturer. This also facilitates the processing and/or sending of data to and from hospital information systems and other (e.g., picture archiving and communication) workstations. Bone mineral analysis studies typically use CT images to provide measurements and assessments of BMD in particular areas of the body (e.g., hip, spine). The software may be used also to detect areas of bone growth, fractures, tumors, bone infections, and/or arthritis. The software may or may not be available separate from the CT equipment and may be updated and/or upgraded (i.e., through the release of modified versions) during the life of the equipment.
