Blades designed as the cutting component of powered (electric or pneumatic) surgical instruments that are intended for cutting the cornea (i.e., keratomes). These blades typically consist of a flat piece of metal (e.g., stainless steel) with one sharp edge that can cut thin sections of the cornea with uniform thickness. Keratome blades are usually intended for use with a particular type of keratome; they are used in keratoplasty procedures and may also be used for lamellar resection of the cornea (e.g., to make a corneal flap in patients undergoing LASIK surgery).
