Eye (ophthalmic) surgery knives designed to make incisions that open the capsule of the eye lens (also known as capsulotomy, cystitomy, and cystotomy). These devices typically consist of manual, slender, handheld instruments that include a hollow cannula with a sharp point and sharp cutting edges (either straight, curved, or angled) at the distal end. These knives usually include an adapter at the proximal end that permits irrigation and/or aspiration through the cannula using a syringe. Lens capsule eye knives are used mainly for posterior capsulotomy performed after cataract surgery. Anterior capsulotomy knives are also available.
