Surgical knives designed to cut through a surgical sheath located in the abdominal wall during laparoscopic procedures. These knives typically consist of a long shaft instrument with a blade at its distal tip and a handle at the proximal end that remains outside the patient. Some laparoscopic knives include detachable (e.g., using a screwing mechanism) blades at the distal tip. Laparoscopic surgical knives are intended for a few particular uses (e.g., incision of the hepatic duct or common bile duct during exploration for stones); they are not frequently used due the inherit risks.
