It is located at the lateral border of the crus cerebri in the midbrain of the human ( Paxinos-2012 ), the macaque ( Paxinos-2009a ), the rat ( Swanson-1998 ) and the mouse ( Paxinos-2001 ). The other two terminal nuclei are the dorsal nucleus of the accessory optic tract and the medial nucleus of the accessory optic tract. Functionally the terminal nuclei are three of six magnocellular nuclei of the midbrain reticular nucleus that belong to the reticular formation (functional) of the subcortical motor system ( Swanson-2004 ).
