Computer-aided detection systems that analyze digital information (typically images) from Papanicolaou smear pathology slides taken from samples of cells of the female genital tract to detect abnormalities. They may either digitize the original information or use information provided by digital systems. These systems typically consist of a digitizer or a means to import digital information, a computer capable of using appropriate algorithms, and a display and/or printer to show the detected abnormalities in the genital tract cells. Some systems may include capabilities of archiving and/or communication of view and annotated digital images of pathology scanned slides. Female genital tract Papanicolaou smear slide computer-aid detection systems are used mainly in cytological screening or re-screening of a malignant and premalignant condition of the female genital tract.
