  • Detectors designed to locate the presence or absence of sponges by means of a handheld radiofrequency (RF) wand during the last steps of a surgical procedure to help prevent the retention of surgical sponges inside the patient before closure of the operative field. These detectors typically consist of a central unit that provides and detects RF signals from the sponges and that also shows successful scanning evidence; a handheld wand that is displaced (i.e., scans) along the patient (both vertical and horizontal scans) to detect sponges with integrated radiofrequency tags; and a mat that includes a radiolucent RF antenna that is placed on the operating table. Sponge retention prevention surgical RF detectors can effectively detect the presence of sponges and/or other related devices (e.g., RF labeled swabs and towels) as long as these devices contain a radiofrequency tag. However, they cannot count and/or identify particular sponges or other devices.
