Devices designed for manual application of rotatory forces (i.e., torque) to the external (proximal) end of a high-torque guide wire, providing appropriate steering and rotatory motion to the working tip of the guide wire. These devices typically include an interlocking flexible mechanism with a handle that permits the application of torque to guide wires in a given range of diameters (e.g., from 0.26 to 1.0 mm/ 0.010 to 0.040 inch), facilitating the guide wire manipulation and displacement. External torque guide wire devices are used mainly in vascular procedures in the peripheral and central vasculature and less frequently in other body tracts (e.g., bile ducts) to apply high-torque to dedicated guide wires intended for that purpose.
