Detectors designed to locate sponges during the last steps of a surgical procedure to help prevent the retention of surgical sponges inside the patient before closure of the operative field. These detectors may consist of conventional mobile or portable radiographic units that can detect sponges which include a radio opaque label or handheld devices that can detect radiofrequency labeled sponges. Sponge retention prevention surgical detectors can detect sponges and/or other related devices (e.g., swabs, towels) that are difficult to locate during the surgical procedure but cannot count and/or identify particular sponges or other items.
