Shoe modifier gait foot orthoses designed as a permanent modification of a shoe by attaching a sole that rocks the foot from heel strike to toe off without bending. These devices improve the user\'s gating capabilities by enhancing forward propulsion. These orthoses typically consist of prefabricated, or more frequently, custom-made devices, whose shape and characteristics depend on the patient\'s problems and/or the gaiting characteristic to be improved. Rocker sole shoe modifier orthoses may be intended for a variety of deformities, to reduce pressure on the plantar area of the foot, and/or to facilitate walking. Rocker soles are usually classified according to the shape and/or the desired effect on the feet (e.g., mild, toe-only, heel-to-toe rocker soles).
