?:definition
  • Inter-phalangeal (IP) joint orthoses designed to make possible and/or improve the functional activities of the fingers during common daily activities. These devices provide active finger use and facilitate the functional use of the hand. These orthoses are prefabricated devices available in several different types to prevent and/or compensate for malfunctioning of the fingers; they may be also intended for repositioning one or more of the finger and/or thumb joints. The devices consist of semi-rigid or soft orthoses that may include malleable metal stays. Functional IP joint orthoses are intended mainly for patients after traumatic brain damage, strokes, or those suffering from arthritis diseases. Dedicated functional IP joint orthoses (e.g., split rings) are available.
