Radiotherapy patient position monitoring systems that use infrared scanning to track patient position during radiotherapy procedures. These monitoring systems usually consist of two infrared scanning cameras which mount to the ceiling of the treatment room; infrared reflecting markers that are placed on the patient\'s skin; a reference device (containing infrared reflective markers) which is mounted on an arm coming out from the patient couch; and integrated computer workstations and dedicated software with alarms to alert the technician of patient position changes from reference parameters, (usually in the sub-millimeter range). These systems may also be networked to couch control systems. This allow clinicians to make automatic position adjustments and access previously stored patient settings. Infrared radiotherapy patient position monitoring systems are mostly used in conjunction with kV x-ray imagers or ultrasound imagers and implanted fiducial markers to track patient position changes, and may be used in respiratory correlated imaging and gated radiotherapy. They are used in radiotherapy suites to detect patient position changes in real time during radiotherapy.
