Microscope platforms (i.e., stages) designed for automated positioning of microscope slides with specimens. These stages usually include automated mechanisms (e.g., using servomotors and/or linear piezoelectric actuators) that perform linear movement along one or more orthogonal directions (i.e., x, y, z movement) and/or rotation in one or more planes with a precision of micro or even nanometers. Some devices can be used for high-resolution microscopic scanning of the slides. Automated positioning microscope stages are usually coupled to computerized controllers that provide the resolution and repeatability required for high-resolution optical microscopy; they are frequently interfaced with computers and/or laboratory information systems.
