Exploratory dental probes designed for introduction into the gingiva that are mainly intended to determine the consistency of gingival tissue and to find the presence, depth, and form of periodontal pockets and sulcus. These probes typically consist of a slender, flexible, metal, elongated, tapered shank with a working end at about a 45-degree angle in relation to a proximal handle. The tapered tip usually include gradations at about one mm separations. There are several different types of periodontal probes. A more slender variant of the probes with longer tips known as furcation probes are used when there is involvement of the bone attached to multi-rooted teeth (i.e., the furcation area).
