  • Computer-aided detection systems designed to detect and classify areas of skin images with atypical appearance (e.g., color, morphology) that may be indicative of melanoma. These systems consist of: (1) conventional imaging devices including a handheld detector, light sources, a computerized unit with algorithms to assess the image of the lesion, and a display; or (2) systems that use several visible and near-infrared light sources which allow the capture of images of the lesion using multiple wavelengths of light (i.e., working as a dermoscope). Then the software computational algorithm generates a binary outcome indicating whether or not the assayed lesion image is probably a melanoma. Melanoma computer-aided detection systems are mainly used as an additional source to corroborate the need of a biopsy to confirm a diagnosis of melanoma.
