  • Handheld mirrors designed for operation inside the mouth as a dental instrument. These mirrors typically consist of a small lightweight glass instrument that is compact and easy to manipulate and whose surface is sufficiently polished to reflect an image of a dental structure located in front of them and a metal (e.g., stainless steel) shaft that supports the mirror and is also used as a handle. Some dental mirrors can only capture half of each dental arch while others can capture a full arch of the mouth. Handheld dental mirrors are used in dental offices, permitting the dentist indirect vision of the dental structures, reflect light onto desired surfaces, and to retract soft tissues.
