Vehicles designed as a tricycle that combine a wheelchair and the rear of a bicycle in tandem. The vehicle consists of the frame, pedals, seat, handlebars, and back wheel of a bicycle and a detachable wheelchair at the front. The vehicle is pedaled and steered by the person who is seated on the bicycle frame while the disabled person is seated in the wheelchair; typically the wheelchair can detach from the bike frame for stand-alone use. Some of these vehicles include battery-powered capabilities (i.e., batteries and electric motors) to assist the pedaler; they may also include wheelchair attachments such as lap belts and adjustable head and foot rests. Wheelchair/bicycles are intended to bring long-range outdoor rides to a temporarily or permanently disabled person who cannot operate a powered wheelchair by him or herself.
