  • Gait (i.e., functional) knee lower-limb orthoses consisting of an orthotic joint designed to support and assist the knee joint during normal motion. These orthoses consist of prefabricated or custom-made devices, typically including soft cuffs encircling the thigh and leg, respectively, and an adjustable mechanism at the knee joint that limits and/or controls the direction and/or range of motion of the joint. Orthotic joint knee orthoses intended to limit the extension, lock, and/or automatically lock and free the joint (i.e., stance and swing control) of the joint movement are also available. Orthotic joint functional knee orthoses are intended mainly for long-term use in normal activities by users with unilateral muscle weakness, such as patients who previously suffered from poliomyelitis (i.e., post-polio paralysis and/or syndrome).
