Finger orthoses designed to make possible and/or improve the functional activities of the metacarpo-phalangeal finger (MP) joints during common daily activities. These devices allow for active thumb use and they facilitate the functional use of the hand. These orthoses typically consist of semi-rigid devices with plastic and/or aluminum finger rings. They may include hinges at the MP joints to allow for flexion and extension of the joints, and permit unimpeded grasp and pinch. Functional MP orthoses are intended for patients with chronic diseases such as arthritis; dedicated ulnar deviation splints are also available.
