?:definition
  • Therapeutic wrist orthoses designed for external modification of the structural and/or functional characteristics of the wrist joint, that keep the joint in a desired position (i.e., without allowing movement of the joint) using a short cast. These orthoses typically consist of a cast that is placed along the wrist from the palm of the hand to the forearm (known as a short-arm cast) with the wrist in its maximum extended position. Sometimes the cast is placed with the wrist flexed; in that case, the cast is changed periodically to get more extended positions each time. Short-arm casts are used mainly to treat flexion contractures of the wrist; bi-valved short-arm casts are also available for this use.
