Functional shoulder-elbow orthoses designed to support to the weight of the upper limb that are mounted on a lateral wheelchair arm, providing assistance to the shoulder and elbow joints during normal activities. These orthoses consist of a wheelchair bracket and a proximal (standard) or \'elevating\' arm; the device may include springs or rubber bands to supplement the lack of strength of the muscles. Wheelchair mounted shoulder-elbow support orthoses, also known as mobile arm supports (MAS), are frequently used to assist the upper-limb function of patients with severe muscular impairment as consequence of illness or spinal cord trauma.
