Molecular assay reagents intended to identify mutations in the parkin 2 (PARK2) gene, located at chromosome 6q25.2-q27, which encodes for the protein parkin that is involved in degrading unwanted proteins by attaching ubiquitin to damaged and excess proteins. Parkin may also act as a tumor suppressor protein and regulate the supply and release of synaptic vesicles from nerve cells. This genetic mutation is associated with early onset (juvenile) Parkinson\'s disease.
