Serology reagents intended to detect immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies to Herpes simplex virus serotype 2 (HSV2), a DNA virus of the family Herpesviridae. HSV2 is mainly sexually transmitted; it is an etiologic agent of a variety of conditions including genital infections. Activation of latent herpesvirus is associated with some malignancies. Persistence of the virus for the lifetime of the host is common.
