Serology reagents intended to detect antibodies to Herpes simplex virus serotype 1 (HSV1), a DNA virus of the family Herpesviridae. HSV1 is transmitted mainly by infected saliva. HSV1 causes a variety of diseases, typically nongenital infections, but may cause sexually transmitted genital infections. Activation of latent herpesvirus is associated with some malignancies. Persistence of the virus for the lifetime of the host is common.
