Molecular assay reagents intended to identify Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1), a DNA virus of the family Herpesviridae, by detecting the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of the target virus. HSV1 is transmitted mainly by infected saliva. This virus may cause a variety of diseases, typically nongenital infections, but it may be the cause of sexually transmitted genital infections. Activation of latent HSV1 is associated with some malignancies. Persistence of the virus for the lifetime of the host is common.
