Molecular assay reagents intended to identify eastern equine encephalitis virus, a virus of the genus Alphavirus, family Togaviridae, by detecting the ribonucleic acid (RNA) of the target virus. This virus may cause subclinical infections with a low-grade fever in humans; in some cases this fever may be followed by encephalitis or and encephalomyelitis, characterized by increasing drowsiness, neck rigidity, confusion, paralysis, convulsions, and coma. The virus is typically transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes of the genus Aedes and other species (e.g., culex mosquitoes).
