Microbiology reagents used to detect and/or identify Toxoplasma gondii, a species of obligate intracellular coccidian protozoa parasite. These parasites may cause toxoplasmosis, a mild and self-limited infection, but extensive damage (e.g., to the brain, eyes, cardiac muscle) may occur, mostly in immunocompromised patients or through transplacental transmission to a fetus. They are usually transmitted by the feces of cats or via tissue cysts in infected meat.
