Molecular assay reagents intended to identify Toxoplasma gondii, a species of obligate intracellular coccidian protozoa parasite, by detecting specific genetic information of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of the target parasite. These parasites may cause toxoplasmosis, a mild and self-limited infection, but extensive damage (e.g., to the brain, eyes, cardiac muscle) may occur, mostly in immunocompromised patients or through transplacental transmission to a fetus. The parasites are usually transmitted via feces of cats or through tissue cysts in infected meat.
