Molecular assay reagents intended to identify Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium closely resembling bacteria of the family Corynebacteriaceae, by detecting specific genetic information of the ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) of the target bacteria. These bacteria are the etiologic agent of listeriosis, which may cause in utero infections that can result in abortion, stillbirth, or premature birth; infections acquired during birth can cause cardiorespiratory distress, diarrhea, vomiting, and meningitis. Infection in adults can produce meningitis, endocarditis, and disseminated granulomatous lesions.
